Laundry pods are convenient but expensive. I compared cost per load for pods, liquid and powder and found how much convenience really costs.

Laundry pods are convenient. Toss one in, done. But convenience has a price. I compared cost per load for pods, liquid and powder detergents for my family's laundry.

Pods

**Cost per load:** usually the highest. **Pros:** easy, no measuring, no spills. **Cons:** expensive, and one pod may be too much for small loads. Keep them away from kids and pets.

Liquid

**Cost per load:** moderate. **Pros:** good for pretreating stains. **Cons:** easy to overuse. Most people pour far more than needed.

Powder

**Cost per load:** often the lowest. **Pros:** cheap and effective. **Cons:** can leave residue in cold water if not dissolved well.

The overuse problem

Many people use too much detergent. The fill lines on caps are often higher than necessary. Using less saves money and can be better for your machine.

Store brands

Store brands often perform well, especially for everyday laundry.

My numbers

For a family of four doing about eight loads a week, switching from name-brand pods to a store-brand liquid, measured properly, cut our detergent spending roughly in half. Same clean clothes. Nobody in my house noticed, and they notice everything.

High-efficiency machines

Use HE detergent in HE machines. It produces fewer suds. Regular detergent in an HE washer can leave residue and make the machine smell over time.

Stain treatment

Pretreating stains with a bit of liquid detergent often works as well as specialized stain removers. Rub it in, wait ten minutes, then wash. For grass and food stains, that's usually enough.

Skip the extras

Scent boosters and fabric softener add cost per load fast. Softener can also reduce absorbency on towels. Try a load without them. You may not miss them.

Bulk and subscriptions

Bulk detergent can save money. Online subscriptions offer convenience, but compare unit prices against store sales before every renewal.

Where to buy

Walmart and Target offer competitive prices and solid store brands. Target often bundles household staples into gift card promotions. Amazon has subscription discounts and bulk options that save you carrying heavy jugs.

Verdict

Pods are convenient but cost more per load. Liquid or powder used correctly can cut your laundry costs significantly.
